It's been a while since my last post, but most of the work I've been doing I haven't been able to show. And a lot of it has been working on other artist's work, such as color flatting for comic books. I may post some of those pages later, though.

So this is an environment background piece that was done for an online game. Required were various scenes and environments, with a few others being a swamp, mountains, and a forest scene.

It was originally in a square format, but when cropped to portrait format the composition was vastly improved. So it's the newest print that I'm selling at art shows.

Frank Frazetta

Master fantasy artist and illustrator Frank Frazetta passed away Monday at the age of 82. Frazetta has had a massive influence on later generations of artists- painters and illustrators of course, but also filmmakers as well.

Illustrator Greg Manchess posted his view on Frazetta at the tor.com website and the Ninja Mountain and Sidebar podcasts have published tribute shows as well (links below).

Also, here is an interesting quote from Guillermo del Toro, as taken from Frazetta's obituary in the LA Times (link below):

Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-nominated co-writer of "Pan's Labyrinth," which he also directed along with the "Hellboy" films, said that Frazetta was nothing less than "an Olympian artist that defined fantasy art for the 20th century." The filmmaker, reached Monday in New Zealand where he is working on a two-film adaptation of " The Hobbit," said Frazetta's influence is difficult to explain to people outside the fantasy world, just as Norman Rockwell would be an elusive figure to define for someone unfamiliar with the U.S. heartland.

For a while now, whenever I've done black and white line art, I've done it digitally with the Wacom tablet and Photoshop, as is the case with most of my illustration work. The Phoenix Rises: Rebirth of Realms of Fantasy Magazine

I've been a subscriber to Realms of Fantasy magazine since 1999, and so was very disappointed to learn early this year that it had been shut down. Luckily, fan mobilization on facebook and other sites helped persuade Warren Lapine, owner of Tir Na Nog Press, to purchase the magazine and save it from permanent print death.

It seems every time I turn around, I read about another magazine closing, or in some cases, shutting down print operations and only offering online subscriptions. So for this reason as well, the relaunch of RoF is welcome news.

Now on to a quick review of the August issue--the first issue since the relaunch. They have kept the same basic look to the magazine, and all of the features and columns have returned as well, including the following departments: folkroots (which covers folklore and myth), the art gallery, books, movies, and games. The fiction section includes four stories, including "Our Lady Scarlet", by Tanith Lee. One of the changes they did make is switch to a thicker cover stock and much thicker mailing cover (I'm not sure what the actual name for this is, but it's the temporary, removable cover on subscriber issues). Occasionally an issue arrives slightly damaged, so this is a welcome change as each issue should better withstand rough handling.

Here is my entry for the next Concept Tuesday art challenge at ArtOrder. The task: to design four characters- Defender, Striker, Controller, and Leader using silhouette only.

From ArtOrder:

In our imaginary game, we have 4 playable races - adopted from the four D&D® "character roles":

Defender - Defenders have the highest defenses in the game and good close-up offense. They are the party's front line conbatants: wherever they are standing, that's where the action is. Defenders have abilities and powers that make it difficult for enemies to move past them or to ignore them in battle.

Striker - Strikers specialize in dealing high amounts of damage to a single target at a time. They have the most concentrated offense of any character in the game. Strikers rely on superior mobility, trickery or magic to move around tough foes and single out the enemy they want to attack.

Controller - Controllers deal with large numbers of enemies at the same time. They favor offense over defense, using powers that deal damage to multiple foes at once, as well as subtler powers that weaken, confuse, or delay their foes.

Leader - Leaders inspire, heal, and aid the other characters. Leaders have good defenses, but their strength lies in powers that protect their companions and target specific foes for the party to concentrate on.

Upon looking at this knight and castle sketch again, I decided I liked the original dimensions better, so I lopped off the top and bottom sections. One of the reasons why I tried to alter the composition in the first place was so that it would fit this 16" x 20" piece of masonite that I planned to use for the painting. That's often not a good idea. It's best to match the board or canvas to the original composition, not the other way around. I knew better, but thought I would try it anyway.

Another painting that I'm going to start is of Khalan, a main character in the Sword of Truth books, which has just been turned into a tv series- Legend of the Seeker. I'm basing this painting on reference of the tv show character. She's in the woods, with an ancient oak tree in the middle ground, to the right of her. It turns out that this composition fits the masonite almost perfectly, so I'll use it for this painting.

Castle and Knight Progress: More Sketches

This is a follow up post to the initial sketch I posted the other day.

I decided to change the dimensions on this painting, so I added sections to the top and bottom of the sketch. I sketched that digitally in Photoshop.

Below that is a color rough that suggests a possible color scheme. I also thought about setting the scene in autumn.

Again, although I'm painting the color roughs digitally, I'll be painting the actual painting in oil.

Night of Fire Fantasy Art

This is an older piece from 2004. I've had it sitting on an easel here in the studio for the past few days, and it just dawned on me that it would make a good post.

I remember putting a lot of time into this. It's 16" x 20" and painted in acrylics. I began by establishing a composition with thumbnail drawings sketched in pencil. I then painted two small color rough thumbnails as well as a sky/mountain/valley color study in order to establish the color scheme. Then I painted a value study of the composition and finished up with a pencil study of the two main characters in the foreground.

After that, I drew the composition full size on tracing paper, and then transferred it to watercolor board. I fleshed out the drawing thoroughly right on the board, then spray fixed it and sealed it with two coats of matte medium (one layer stroked on horizontally, the second vertically). The matte medium not only helped isolate the drawing from the subsequent paint layers, but by altering the stroke direction for each layer, it gives a fine linen texture on top of the nice watercolor board texture.

And after all of that I was finally ready to start painting... whew.

This one was somewhat different for me. I've never painted the reaper before, so that was good, but I also explored paint strokes and color in creating the image, especially in the background. I tried some new techniques to create the painted glow effects around the skull too. All in all, an interesting image to work on.

That big funky blob is an airship. It's just a visual short hand way to get basic info down as quickly as possible. Sometimes I sketch with pencil and paper, sometimes digitally. Once the basic composition is sketched out, you have all the general information for the final painting.

Painter Sketch

This a sketch I did in Painter a couple of weeks ago. I used the divine proportion tool and layout grid to help establish the composition. This sketch was done to become familiar with using those tools, as well as with painting with paper textures and the pattern pen tool. The paper texture used was an interesting Old Master parchment texture, and the pattern used with the pattern pen tool was the hens and chicks (a grouping of flowers).

This is a sketch I composed using the divine proportion tool in Painter X. You can toggle the divine proportion overlay on and off by checking a box in the divine proportion palette. Here you can see that the center of interest is in the general area where the spiral begins. This is just a basic, simple composition to illustrate how you can use this tool, of course. It can also be used for more complicated compositions as well.

Cave Faun, Cave Faun

Here's the latest progress shot of Mr. Faun. I just compared this image to the previous one, and some of the additions/changes I like, some I don't, and then the rest I'm just not sure about. I've mainly added additions and texture to the cave environment, but also worked on the creature some as well. I'm not sure how much of this is obvious on initial viewing. I've been painting on a handful of different pieces, and have only gotten a limited amount done on this one.

I'm finishing this piece in Painter, after all. I've been painting with it almost solely for the past several days and I'm definitely getting more comfortable with it. Not only with the various brushes, but also the shortcuts. I spent a few minutes last week setting up additional ones. Things like flipping the image horizontally and flattening layers.

I'm really enjoying working with Painter, and I may devote a special post to it soon. The new version, Painter X has some very neat features like the divine proportion and layout tools. I also like the custom brush palette, although I'm not sure if that was reinstated from Painter 8, or if it was in Painter 9 as well.

This is the first post in a series chronicling the evolution of a painting from initial sketch to final image.

So what this is is the initial sketch I did back in the second half of 2005. I roughed it out in Painter using the chalk tool. I've recently decided to flesh it out into a finished painting, painting it both in Photoshop and Painter. Since I'm much more familiar with Photoshop and it's brush engine is faster, I'll probably be painting it mostly with that software, while occasionally using Painter.

Anyway, the next post will be the character in the initial stages of the painting process.

I painted this in Photoshop today from a 2003 pencil sketch. I've meant for some time to go back to that sketch and do something more with it. I may at some point paint a fully fleshed out portrait of this guy. I think it would make an interesting piece.

I had forgotten about this one. Painted in Photoshop. Once I rediscovered it and tweaked the colors, I was suprised at how much better it worked. It was way too green and murky at first.
